Opex, the country’s largest garment factory, closed
Opex and Sinha Textile Group, one of the largest textile and garment manufacturing plants in Asia, closed down.Last week, Opex and Sinha Textile Group authorities officially closed all their factories in Kanchpur after years of illness.
A notice signed by Baniz Ali, Acting Director (Administration) of OPEX & Sinha Textile Group on October 18, said that the owner of OPEX & Sinha Textile Group has suffered financial losses in all its factories in Kanchpur since 2012. Even then he continued to run the factories with salaries and allowances and other expenses through the sale of loans and land. But the Corona epidemic caused a lack of procurement. Apart from that, the factory environment has been ruined due to the chaos of the workers and employees as well as low efficiency and complete closure of activities from time to time. In this situation, the financial condition of the owner has deteriorated. At present it is no longer possible to run factories.
The notice further states that the owner does not have the financial means or capacity to continue the factory. In such a situation, in the interest of the safety of the industry and all those involved in the industry, in accordance with Section 26 (a) of the Bangladesh Labor Act 2006, all the garment factories and washing plants of the Kanchpur branch of the OPEC Group were declared permanently closed from 19 October. In case of payment of arrears including salary arrears, the decision will be paid in consultation with the Ministry of Labor or the Department of Labor, BGMEA, labor representatives and all concerned parties.
Copies of the closure notices of all garment factories and washing plants in Kanchpur branch have been handed over to the presidents of BKMEA and BGMEA as well as Narayanganj Superintendent of Police, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Narayanganj Police, Department of Factory and Establishment Inspection, Department of Labor. He built a large textile and garment production complex at Kanchpur on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway, 20 km from Dhaka.
The company, which started its journey in the eighties, had 45,000 workers. Garments worth thousands of crores of rupees were exported. Shirts, sweaters, denim, knitwear etc. were made there. Built on 43 acres of land, the complex is also recognized as one of the largest textile and garment complexes in Asia.
